Many years ago, there was a group of cats who lived in a tribe. The tribe was ruled as a monarchy, the leader, Hailstar. He and his mate had a litter of three toms, each eligible for the right to be heir. A large, dark tom named Night-. An average sized, lithe, gray tom named Flint-. A small, pure white tom named Little-. Hailstar was a strong leader, and believed it took a strong body and mind to be the leader of their mountain tribe. So the chosen heir was Night-. The two smaller brothers disagreed with Night-’s beliefs. Night- made his own belief, naming them creators. Flint- and Little- believed his idea of these ‘creators’ was an insult to their ancestors, who were the ones who guide them down the true path.
The brothers grew further apart as their father grew weak and old, each believing they were the true leader of the tribe. Hailstar died one extremely cold leafbare. The three brothers argued over Night- becoming Nightstar, which led to a fight between the three. The mountain tribe was divided by their loyalties and beliefs. They split into three groups, each following one of the brothers.
Each leader went down the mountain with their group of cats, forming their own clans. Flintstar traveled to a lake, where he decided they would stay. The cats learned to swim and fish and became known as Lakeclan. Littlestar went to a forest and found a small stream that ran to a pool the cats came to know as their sacred pool. This clan was named Streamclan. Nightstar stayed near the mountain, believing the closer they were to the summit, the closer they could be to their creators. They were named Summitclan.
The three clans began to settle in their new territories though it did not take long for war to break out. The three brothers still could not get along, believing the others should follow their own beliefs. After a long war with many deaths, the three leaders died. The next generation of leaders were not as stubborn as their predecessors and brought peace to the territories. The set down a warrior code that each clan would follow, and agreed to meet every new moon where the three territories met, in a small clearing with a large rock. The meeting place became known as Smooth Stone and the tradition has carried on, peace reigning over the clans. Now three new, young leaders lead the clans. Will peace prevail or will their inexperience ignite some old hatred?
